Length of Class: 2 semesters, 1 Period + AP Bio Guided Study.
Credit Value: 1.5
Suggested sequence of classes: -- Regular or honors biology and regular or honors chemistry are required.
Course Description: The goal of AP Biology is to understand key science practices that can be used to develop explanations and predictions of natural phenomena. Students work to develop advanced reasoning and inquiry skills through experimentation, data analysis, and interpretation of results. After essential course knowledge is discussed during lecture, this knowledge will be applied through homework activities, laboratory procedures, and completion of lab reports. Students will utilize math skills and logic to connect concepts within and across units of study. The result will be readiness for the study of advanced topics in college and preparedness for the AP Biology Exam.
AP Test Format:
50% of total score: Section I: 63 Multiple Choice, 6 Grid-in math problems (90 minutes)
50% of total score: Section II: 2 Long Free Response, 6 Short Free Response (90 minutes)
Advanced Placement exams are scheduled for the first two weeks of May each year.
Readings, Reading Expectations: Students are expected to actively read each chapter covered in class. Chapters average about 20 pages of text.
Skills Needed and Skills Developed: Skills required include a basic understanding of biology, chemistry, and Algebra II. Strong reading skills are recommended, along with good study habits and a desire to understand higher-level biology. Skills developed will include design of laboratory experiments to test hypotheses and application of knowledge to solve problems and answer questions.
