Length of Class: 2 semesters, 1 period per day
Credit Value: 1.0
Suggested sequence of classes: -- Honors Chemistry or Regular Chemistry with strong teacher recommendation; Algebra II (may be concurrent).
Course Description: AP Physics 1 is an algebra-based, introductory college-level physics course that explores topics such as Newtonian mechanics (including rotational motion); work, energy, and power; mechanical waves and sound; and introductory, simple circuits. Through inquiry-based learning, students will develop scientific critical thinking and reasoning skills. Replaces previous OHS course “Honors Physics).
AP Test Format:
Each three hour AP Physics 1 exam has the following format:
50% of total score: Section I: 50 Multiple Choice problems (90 minutes)
50% of total score: Section II: 5 Free Response problems (90 minutes)
Advanced Placement exams are scheduled for the first two weeks of May each year.
Laboratory Requirement: 25% of the instructional time will be spent in hands-on laboratory work, with an emphasis on inquiry-based investigations that provide students with opportunities to apply the science practices.
Skills Needed and Skills Developed: No prior course work in physics is necessary. Students should have completed geometry and be concurrently taking Algebra II or an equivalent course. Students will develop skills in establishing and using lines of evidence to refine testable explanations and predictions of natural phenomena.
