Problem Solving homework should not be a struggle, rather it should be a stimulating challenge! Here are some things to say to your child if the enjoyment is fading...
Part of the fun of learning is in not always knowing the answer. Problem solving situations are introduced in the spirit of inquiry!
As a parent, you can:
* Encourage your student to find a solution on his/her terms
* Be patient with your child`s trial and error approaches
* Encourage your child to be persistent
If your child asks for help, keep the spirit of inquiry alive…
Try these questions:
* What are you trying to find out?
* Explain the situation in your own words!
* What have you tried so far?
* What did you learn from those attempts/tries?
* How else might you start?
* What strategies have you tried?
* Have you thought about trying_______________?
Helpful Homework Habits:
At School
* Write down all assignments in your planner during GE class.
* Bring home all supplies needed to be able to complete the assignments.
* Keep all of the homework in your GE folder or binder.
* Always keep your binder or GE folder in your book bag, unless you are working on the assignments.
Never put the folder in your desk at school.
At Home
* Do your GE assignments the evening of GE class.
* Before you start doing the assignments, look at your planner and make sure you are doing all of the correct assignments
* Before you put everything away, take one last look to make sure your work is complete. If so, check off the completed assignment.
* Put all assignments back into your folder or binder in the proper place. Place the folder or binder into your book bag IMMEDIATELY.
* Clean out and organize your book bag and folder each night.
When you become a coach and provide support without doing the problem for your child, you will find your child capable of wonderful THINKING!
