Speech/Language Pathologist (SLP) Appreciation Day was celebrated on 05.18.22: School settings are one of the top three work environments for SLPs. SLPs study both aspects of speech, which includes verbal means of communication, and language, which includes the social aspects and understanding of communication. Please thank the Speech and Language Pathologist working in your buildings for the role that they play.

Mental Health Month: established in 1949 to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans' lives and to celebrate recovery from mental illness. Mental health is essential for a person's overall health. Prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can recover from mental disorders and live full and productive lives. Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPIHM): May 7, 1843, the first Japanese immigrant, a 14-year-old boy named Nakahama Manjiro, arrived in the US, and on May 10, 1869, the transcontinental railroad, which was built in part by over 15,000 Chinese immigrants, was completed. AAPIHM originated in 1978 when it was passed as a singular week by Congress, designating it as the first week of May 1979 by President Jimmy Carter. President George H.W. Bush issued a Presidential Proclamation in 1990 marking the entire month as AAPIHM.

SD308 has partnered with Hanover Research to conduct a short survey to help us understand the staff climate and culture in our district. Your responses will help us plan and make improvements for the upcoming 22-23 school year.

Hanover Research is an independent research firm based in Washington, D.C., and is in no way affiliated with any other entity or organization. All information that is provided will be maintained on a confidential basis by Hanover Research and will only be reported to SD308 in an aggregate form. Your responses are anonymous and will be kept confidential, so please be as open and honest as possible. The survey should take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.

PRIDE WINNERS (May): The following individuals were recognized as the BOE’s May PRIDE winners for the many contributions they have made to our students. For the presentation, click here.
Teachers of the Month: Katrina Beedle, a Speech & Language Pathologist from Old Post Elementary School; Kayla Nahas Harper, a Science Teacher at Oswego High School; Kelli Springsteen, a Social Studies Teacher at Thompson Junior High School; and Melissa Gleason, a counselor at Oswego East High School. Employees of the Month: Lynn Demke, a Security Dean’s Assistant at Oswego East High School, and Nora Garcia, a Health Office Secretary at Boulder Hill Elementary School.
We thank our generous District Partners who have donated prizes to our winners all year and have helped make this program a success: Allied First Bank, Chick-fil-A, Huntington Learning Center and Culvers. We would also like to thank all those who nominated individuals this year and look forward to recognizing more individuals during the 2022-2023 school year.
